The US embassy to China has apologized for a social mediapost that compared Chinese students applying for visas to puppieswanting to play, which was criticized by online users asinsensitive and derogatory.
The post, which has since been deleted, contained a videoshowing a puppy escaping its pen, with a caption that said “springis here and the flowers are in bloom, are you like thisdoggy who can’t wait to go out and play?”
“The US embassy’s student visa application service has resumedin phases. What are you waiting for?” said the post, which wasfirst published on Weibo on Wednesday.
The post soon ignited Chinese netizens' anger as many believedthe US Embassy had compared Chinese students to dogs. Thoseindignant web users called it "blatant racism."
An embassy spokesperson told the South China Morning Post theWeibo announcement was meant to be lighthearted and humorous, however it was taken down immediately when the embassy saw it hadnot been received in that spirit.
“We have the utmost respect for all Chinese people, certainlyincluding Chinese students. We apologize if anyone was offended, that was certainly not our intention,” the spokesperson said.
